It took a month of Sundays but it's done. We bought this oak table at a charity furniture sale for £20 (back in April) and it needed some work. Josh cursed, and sweat, and nearly quit many times. But in the end, the work has paid off and he proudly reassembled the table on the weekend. Labor o' love... now he'll have to watch out for the 'Rabbit's New Rug' syndrome. That is a reference to one of Josh's favorite children's books, which teaches the value of friends over possessions. We're thinking about kid's books a little more recently and are wondering if you have any favorites to recommend that we can look out for on Ebay?

I agree - what a wonderful job you did on the table!
As for books, two of my favourites as a child were both by Jill Tomlinson "The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark" and "The Aardvark Who Wasn't Sure"
Stunning table, beautifully finished - loads of work - congratulations on finally finishing it!!! About the books, the first ones to come to my mind from my own childhood are the "Little Bear" books by Else Minarik (pictures by Maurice Sendak), and the Rupert books (also a bear). And the series that I remember you kids really liking were the Amelia Bedelia books. What a great idea, asking people for their favourite children's books. What a collection that will make! Love, Mom (Grandma)
One of my favourites as a kid was "The Enchanted Wood" by Enid Blyton. She's a popular author in England and you shouldn't have any problem finding tons of her books in stores in England (probably in second hand stores too). There was also a series "The Famous Five" who were kids who solved mysteries that I enjoyed. I can't remember the author's name but it's an English series as well (you can tell my childhood was influenced by family from England!)

Your beautiful table has been duly admired Josh. Do you fancy having a go at ours?
Ref. Bonnie's comment - Enid Blyton also wrote the Famous Five. I'm sure we've got plenty of Children's books on our shelves for you to browse through some time. Personally, my favourite is Winnnie the Pooh (original not Disney!)

Took me a while to remember... one of my favorite series was by Richard Scarry. All of his characters are animals, dressed and acting like people. Great illustrations, good morals to the stories... sigh. Those were the days. My favorite books were Busy, Busy Town and What Do People Do All Day? - but they're all great.
(However, I just looked at the second title on Amazon, and the first page says "Everyone is a worker!" - it sounds vaguely like propaganda! Maybe they aren't as innocent as I thought! ;)
Great job on the table!
My kids have hundreds of books, and last year I discovered the best books for kids of all ages. They are published in the UK and are sold at home parties or through a representative. They are called Usborne books. My kids ages 1,3 and 11 love them. They are beautiful quality, affordable, educational and fun for the parents to read as well. I especially love the Farmyard tales. They have a great website, google usborne books.
Josh, how do I start a blog like this?
Kim Kouri in Montreal
Thanks for all your book suggestions everyone - that's given us tons to go on. And Kim, in the upper right hand corner of this blog is a link to 'get your own blog'. It's as simple as following the easy instructions. Everything is automated, really. My only strong suggestion is to answer 'no' to 'Add your Blog to our listings?' in the 'settings' menu. Otherwise, random people can search/browse/and comment on your blog. We have found this site to be completely invaluable for feeling connected with friends and family. Let me know when you've got your blog up and running and I'll add a link to it. Good to hear from you guys!
Josh.
