Heeby Jeebies

This blog entry first appeared as a comment in Grandma and Grandpa's house. After writing it we decided that this was a story that deserved to be retold. Here it is, complete with a creepy photo:

Heather has a Big Bird stuffed animal given to her by her parents that creeps us out a little (okay a lot). It has batteries and, in principle, is a charming toy. When you cover its eyes and remove your hand it says 'peek-a-boo'. When you tickle its tummy it laughs (albeit diabolically), when you squeeze its toes it recites "This little piggy..." (three toes, three parts), when you bring its hands together it recites "Patty cakes patty cakes, baker's man...". All this in Big Bird's voice. We had placed it in Jamie's crib. The annoyance started with 'Peek-a-boos' startling us every time the lights were turned on for night feedings. The creepiness began a few weeks ago when we arrived home somewhat late. As we entered the house we heard Big Bird laughing upstairs.

We were unable to remove the batteries.

Big Bird is now blindfolded and buried in our closet. Heather's closet. I won't go near the thing.

And yesterday morning Big Bird woke us, apparently wanting to play patty cakes.

Go Big Bird!! He's gone to uni with Heather, so I guess he's learned a trick or two. Hez, remember when you found him hanging from your ceiling light in dorms, courtesy of your roomy?? And blind-folded then too, poor old thing. Josh, we thought you loved "educational toys"! Wait till you "hear" what we're bringing in a few weeks - ha ha ha .... the Grandys in Oz

That was pretty funny! Hey, remember the chirping bird we had in our bathroom in Vancouver?

Can you please post something new because everytime I check your page I see that picture and I am creeped out. :) Peekaboo, my foot. What are toy designers thinking? Although I swore I would never buy a toy that flashed/made music, I bought B. a phone last week. She loves the annoying thing and bites it gleefully.

Ok I'm scared of it too.

And nothing scares me.

Not even Josh.

PS: Forget Big Bird - has Jamie done anything exciting lately? Josh tells me they have had an interesting debate about the socio-economic messages in "War And Peace" but otherwise she's pretty quiet.

We used to have a mirror that would laugh at you when you picked it up, but it too would just spontaneously giggle evily in the middle of the night, even sans batteries:O
