p4mm

Heather was the teaching assistant for Mineralogy 200 for three years or so, way back in the Ordivician Period of her life. Hence her instant recognition of the fact that our two-year-old was happily laying out the symmetry of our 70's linoleum, unassisted. Aren't genetics odd? (The symmetry would be designated p4mm, for those of you who care.)

Funny, Brenda!
No, he's not trained yet. No time...
It's a way of describing how much symmetry a pattern contains. Great fun to try to teach to students!

Weird Heather. I don't really get it. As usual you and Josh are too smart for me.

Hey Laura,
Yeah, whatever. Maybe too weird, but that's all I'll give you. Some students had a REALLY hard time seeing where a mirror could be placed to make both sides of a pattern the same, or where you could stick a pin in and rotate the picture a certain amount and get the same pattern, so... it was neat to see that Justin sort of gets it. Like his Mommy.
Just wait til you see what Josh has up his sleeve for the next post. You're going to LOVE it.
