Conducting research on greenhouse gas cycling by microorganisms, Josh is occasionally exposed to some of the data surrounding the topic of global warming. Wanting to take a closer look at what is going on, this venture of curiosity turned into a talk for schools, churches and community groups. The idea was to take what is known about global warming and present it understandably to non-specialists (including ourselves). We've learned a huge amount in the process, are committed to making changes in the way we live and are excited about building awareness of this growing problem.

Very interesting. I'd love to hear more about your talk and your findings. I'm so tired of talking to people who don't believe in global-warming....
By the way Josh, did you hear that Richard Branson (virgin airlines owner) has offered a $25 Million prize to the first scientist who comes up with a system for extracting greenhouse gases from the atmosphere....Just wanted to let you know, Oh, most favorite brother of mine....Did I ever tell you how smart and wonderful you are?
Your loving, favorite sister,
Cara
Plant a tree!
Did I win?
That's awesome Josh!!! I feel like there's something in the air lately - last week I was asked the same question by the local news and the local paper, wish I had your talk to refer to!
Nice looking slide there buddy. Are you going to post your whole presentation? I'm keen to see the rest of it!
Very interesting Josh - I recently read "State of Fear" by Michael Crichton; this fiction novel deals with the oh-so-popular idea that global warming isn't factual. It includes many real graphs and stats from supposedly reputable sources that show that the globe isn't warming and that icebergs aren't melting . I was just telling mom the other day that you'd probably enjoy reading it and picking it apart.

Very interesting Josh. I'd like to see the rest of your presentation too. Just watched "an inconvenient truth" the other day, and reflected again on how glad I am to be working in the field that I'm working in. Business is good these days (recent stock price not withstanding), and interest in hybrids, etc just keeps growing.

I started preparing the talk about 6 months ago and it seems that since then, there have been countless TV documentaries, magazine issues and news reports covering global warming. And rightly so! Nonetheless, I've tried to keep the talk unique while focussing on the very basics: the underlying data, the root cause of our inaction and suggested first steps toward a solution. Unfortunately, the file size of the talk is enormous - it can't be posted online or emailed. Instead, I cannot recommend "An Inconvenient Truth" enough. It captures the basics very well. Even though he's a politician, I can't fault him for an excellent thesis.
gnat: From your blog it sounds as though you wouldn't have had time to say much of anything!
Sharon, I'll read it. Unlike Michael Crichton (although I loved Sphere, Congo, Jurassic Park and Eaters of the Dead), the prominent scientist critic of climate change is Richard Lindzen. He's the one I watch for a counterbalance. But really, the debate is dead. The Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change shows surprising consesus across the scientific community. A brief summary of their most recent report is worth a quick squint. The Inconvenient Truth also nicely addresses the media-created 'debate' issue.
And Cara, on the topic of technology, our friend Doug recently sent me a link for an innovative technology for generating huge amounts of energy with absolutely no pollution or greenhouse gas production. From Australia! The video takes a while to load but I get all excited about this kind of project.
Clare, I've never thought of the female 'fellow' question before. I'm stumped...
I too was caught by your title, and I think it is great! I guess a girl could go by Fellow too since girls are parts of fellowships now:)
We too would love to hear your speach - maybe you could record it with your slide show and compress it and put it out somehow. Dave is working with a guy to help get electric cars available in Vancouver so you just never know!
Hi Josh, I really liked the "all welcome...consider walking" - it gave me a chuckle, and I think it will stick with people as a reminder of simple choices that can make a big difference. Speaking of which, Caitlin and Sharon are a real inspiration with their back-to-basics voluntary simplicity - I have seen many people's scepticism turn into admiration as they have witnessed what these two young women are accomplishing. I wonder if there are aspects of their lives that the rest of us might consider emulating (without having to give up indoor plumbing!).
I think global warming is a load of hot air! i guess you're heard that before!
